Thunder on the Mountain 2026: Your Guide to Tehachapi's Biggest Car & Motorcycle Show

If you love the rumble of a classic engine and the shine of a freshly waxed hot rod, mark your calendar. Thunder on the Mountain returns to downtown Tehachapi on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Now in its third decade, this beloved show brings nearly 300 classic autos, hot rods, and custom motorcycles to the streets of our historic downtown. Whether you're a lifelong gearhead or just looking for a fun, family-friendly Saturday, this is the event you don't want to miss.

What Is Thunder on the Mountain?

Thunder on the Mountain has been a Tehachapi tradition since 1997, when it was founded by the Tehachapi Car Club. In 2023, the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce officially adopted the event, and it's grown into one of the most anticipated car and motorcycle showcases in the Kern County mountains, organized by local car enthusiasts, volunteers, and sponsors.

Here's where the event earns its name: promptly at noon, every vehicle fires up its engine at once. The deep, vibrating roar echoes off the downtown buildings and surrounding mountains, creating real thunder — a thrilling, one-of-a-kind moment that never fails to delight the crowd. It's worth planning your visit around.

You can register online, or download and mail the registration form to PO Box 401, Tehachapi, CA 93581, or drop it off at 209 E Tehachapi Blvd. Questions? Call the Chamber at 661-822-4180.

Why It's Perfect for Enthusiasts of All Ages

You don't have to be a mechanic to love Thunder on the Mountain. Most of these vehicles were restored by their owners or lovingly preserved by family, and each one has a story the owners are proud to share. Seasoned collectors swap builds and memories while kids light up at the gleaming chrome. It's the kind of event where three generations can wander the same block and everyone walks away smiling.

Plan Your Visit to Downtown Tehachapi

Downtown Tehachapi is the heart of the show, so make a full day of it. Arrive early for the best parking and vehicle-viewing, aim to be there by noon for the engine-start roar, and stick around for the 1:00 PM awards. Comfortable shoes are a must, and don't forget sunscreen and a hat — our September mountain sunshine is no joke. Afterward, explore the local shops, cafes, and tasting rooms that make our downtown such a special place.
